Neutrality and Triple Lock Protection
Ireland should remain militarily neutral, retain independent control over its armed forces and never be drawn into a foreign war without clear democratic and international legal safeguards.
Neutrality and Triple Lock Protection
THE PROPOSAL
1) Oppose the removal of the UN authorisation requirement for overseas peacekeeping deployments. Retain all three safeguards: UN mandate, Government approval and Dáil approval for deployments currently covered by the law.
2) Commit to a referendum on the fundamental principles of Irish military neutrality and the safeguards governing overseas troop deployments, with independent legal advice on the appropriate constitutional and legislative wording.
3) Maintain Ireland's non-membership of NATO and other military alliances or common defence arrangements. Any future proposal to change that fundamental position should require a referendum.
4) Preserve Ireland's independent role in UN peacekeeping, conflict prevention, humanitarian assistance and civilian peacebuilding. Require a clear legal basis and transparent parliamentary scrutiny for overseas military deployments.
5) Invest in maritime surveillance, airspace monitoring, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection and the capacity to protect Irish waters. Defence preparedness should protect Irish sovereignty, not create an automatic commitment to foreign military operations.
